The CDP Hurricane Sandy Disaster Fund

Fund closes in on $500,000 in donations
The devastation and destruction from Hurricane Sandy is unimaginable. Across 16 states and several nations, millions of lives have been affected. While more than $400 million has been raised for immediate relief efforts, recovery is expected to take up to five more years in the US, and even longer in the Caribbean.
The CDP Hurricane Sandy Disaster Fund gives donors an opportunity to maximize the impact of their generosity to support the full life cycle of the disaster. To date, we have raised close to $500,000, including a match gift of $200,000 from The Patterson Foundation. Through CDP’s unparalleled expertise in disaster management and grantmaking, we will invest in projects and initiatives that:
- emphasize funding that is medium- and long-term in nature and based upon the prevailing needs that emerge in the weeks and months to come;
- transect broad disciplines to ease the transition from a disaster to normalcy;
- fill in gaps where public resources are unavailable or scarce;
- foster collaborative relationships among donors—including the sharing of information with funders and nonprofit organizations;
- utilize existing local philanthropic networks and work to strengthen local philanthropy;
- promote cross-sector coordination with academics, donors, think tanks, and public and private humanitarian actors; and
- support innovative research that informs policy changes and strengthens preparations for and response to future disasters.
The programmatic expertise of CDP’s board, staff, and advisory council—paired with an extensive network of disaster management actors and academics—guides the organization’s grantmaking strategy. Emphasis is placed on investing well rather than investing quickly, addressing the greatest needs and gaps in funding that may be yet to emerge.
