Hurricane Season Begins, Nepal Relief Efforts Continue

It’s June, and that means one thing: hurricane season has officially begun. This year’s season is expected to be quiet. Experts at the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration predict a total of six to 11 named storms, of which three to six could become hurricanes. This is well below the 30-year average of 12 named storms in a year.
The prediction for a mild hurricane season doesn’t mean we can be lax, however, in our preparation. It’s important to have a plan. Plan for yourself and your family, plan for your business and if you are a foundation or donor in hurricane prone areas, plan for what level of funding you are willing to provide to your community before, during and after a disaster. Knowing ahead of time what you plan to do after a disaster will ultimately save time, effort, and funds when the event occurs and make your contributions more effective.
The month of May was incredibly busy for the Center for Disaster Philanthropy. As you know, the April 25 earthquake in Nepal and then second quake on May 12 caused catastrophic damage in the country and surrounding areas. We launched our fund the following day. Grants from CDP’s Nepal Earthquake Recovery Fund will go to fund mid- and long-term recovery efforts in this area. We’re excited to see donors taking aggressive action in this disaster and look forward to sharing more with you on our work in this area. CDP plans to host a webinar on the status of Nepal in late June. During this webinar, we will cover what things look like in Nepal almost two months after the disaster occurred, how the situation has changed, and what we believe to be the crucial needs going forward. We will announce a date as soon as panelists are confirmed, but you can go ahead and register here. We look forward to having you on the line.
