Editor’s note: On Aug. 7, 2014, The Center for Disaster Philanthropy announced four grants from its Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) Recovery Fund. Those grants went to Mercy In Action, Direct Relief, Save the Children, and the Women’s Refugee Commission. All were commissioned with the focus of improving the maternal health of women in storm-affected areas, where thousands were giving birth in tents without an attendant, and with no follow-up care for the woman or their baby. The work of our grantees takes the form of training, education, provision of supplies, and the brick and mortar of a birth center. During the next 12 months, we will share with you the stories of those grants – the people that are helped, the hands of those who carry out the work, and how this piece of work fits in the total puzzle of complete recovery.
