Patterson Foundation Invests in CDP with Gift to Support Operations, and Match Opportunity
$50,000 gift affirms the foundation’s ongoing commitment to CDP’s operations
SARASOTA, Fla. (April 21, 2014) – The Patterson Foundation has awarded a $50,000 gift of unrestricted operating funds to the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP), a national nonprofit focused on increasing donor effectiveness throughout the lifecycle of disasters. The gift is in addition to The Patterson Foundation’s current 1:2 match opportunity for CDP, which, once completed, will provide up to $600,000 in operating funds for the organization in 2014.
The additional funds represent The Patterson Foundation’s support of CDP’s quality operations as it strives to increase the efficacy of disaster-related philanthropic donations.
“The Center for Disaster Philanthropy is making a difference in transforming how funders look at disasters,” said Debra Jacobs, president and CEO of The Patterson Foundation. “Organizations like CDP need funds to ensure quality operations. This match helps them focus on just that.”
In 2013, The Patterson Foundation challenged CDP to raise operating funds to sustain itself during its first year of operations. The dollar-for-dollar match from The Patterson Foundation was an incentive for CDP, which gained $440,000 for its operations – including $220,000 in match dollars from the foundation. Following Hurricane Sandy, The Patterson Foundation issued a match up to $200,000, which resulted in $401,400 available through CDP’s Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief Fund to support long-term relief efforts.
Since launching in late 2012, CDP has worked to enhance the impact of disaster-related donations through:
- Emphasis on collaboration across the philanthropic landscape, including coordination between public and private entities
- Focusing on the continuing need for donations during the entire life cycle of a disaster
- Providing strategic resources and expert advice to corporations, groups and private individuals to promote effective giving
