Tamara Winfrey-Harris

Tamara Winfrey-Harris, CSSGB,  is the president of Women’s Fund of Central Indiana, a special interest fund of Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF) that mobilizes people, ideas and investments so every woman and girl in our community has an equitable opportunity to reach her full potential – no matter her place, race or identity. Tamara previously served in a variety of roles at CICF, including vice president of people, culture and brand; vice president of community leadership and effective philanthropy; and vice president of marketing and communications.

Tamara is also a nationally renowned writer and speaker, focusing on issues of race and gender and their intersection with politics, popular culture and current events. Her work has been published in The New York Times, The Atlantic, Los Angeles Times, Ms. magazine and other media. She is the author of the award-winning book, The Sisters Are Alright: Changing the Broken Narrative of Black Women in America (Berrett-Koehler 2015) and Dear Black Girl: Letters from Your Sisters on Stepping into Your Power (Berrett-Koehler 2021). Her essays appear in The Lemonade Reader: Beyonce, Black Feminism and Spirituality(Routledge, 2019); The Burden: African Americans and the Enduring Impact of Slavery (Wayne State University Press, 2018); Black in the Middle: An Anthology of the Black Midwest (Black Belt Publishing, 2020); and other books.

Tamara has been invited to speak on issues of gender, race and social justice at venues across the country, including The Ohio State University, Northern Arizona University, Princeton University and others. In spring semester 2022, Tamara served as Liberator-in-Residence for Bennett College, a women’s HBCU in Greensboro, N.C.
