Together with our partners, we are helping communities thrive.

It is impossible to ignore the profound challenges that marked 2023. The United States experienced a record-breaking 28 billion-dollar severe weather and climate disasters, the highest annual total since records began in 1980. Internationally, our world faced an array of frightening ordeals, from devastating floods in Southeast Asia to the drought in the Horn of Africa to ongoing conflicts in many parts of the world that displaced millions.

Yet, amid these tragedies, our team and partners found reasons to hope and moments to celebrate. In the aftermath of every disaster, from hurricanes in the Caribbean to wildfires in Hawaii, we saw individuals and organizations step up to rebuild and recover. Their spirit of determination reminded us of the incredible capacity for renewal that exists even in the darkest times.

At the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP), our mission is to maximize the impact of philanthropic giving in the face of disasters. The stories of impact you will find in this report are examples of the difference philanthropy can make by supporting general operations, programs and capacity strengthening. You will read about innovative programs that not only provided immediate relief but also laid the groundwork for sustainable recovery. These successes are stories of hope and resilience emerging from chaos, examples of what is possible when we work together with purpose and compassion.

This year, CDP also made significant strides in our efforts to promote equitable recovery. Our focus on supporting marginalized and vulnerable populations ensured that aid reached those who needed it most, addressing long-standing inequities and fostering more inclusive communities. This progress is a testament to what we can achieve when we prioritize fairness and inclusivity in our philanthropic endeavors.

As we reflect on the past year, let us carry forward the lessons learned, and the positive outcomes achieved. Let us remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting those in need, knowing that our collective efforts can and do make a difference. While the road ahead may still present challenges, it also holds the promise of recovery, renewal and a brighter future for all.

Sincerely,

2023 At a Glance

CDP mobilizes philanthropy to strengthen the ability of communities to withstand disasters and recover equitably when they occur.

Amid the devastations from wars, hunger, earthquakes, tornadoes, storms and other disasters were inspiring efforts by communities to meet immediate needs and address root causes in support of full equitable recovery.

Through our consulting services and educational resources, we helped our clients and partners enhance their disaster giving and expand their impact. We funded programs that are often overlooked yet essential to rebuilding communities. Our grantmaking, technical expertise, extensive sectoral knowledge and convenings catalyzed giving and built and supported donor coalitions, amplifying our impact.

In 2023, we also continued to take steps to embed racial and intersectional equity in all we do in our internal operations.

When donors and partners support our work, the ripple effect of their giving extends to more philanthropists and, in turn, more disaster-stricken communities and individuals.

Unrestricted support exponentially amplifies that impact, and we thank those who trust and support our expertise in moving philanthropy forward.

Thank you to PayPal, Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies, Google.org, eBay Foundation, St. Joseph Community Partnership Fund, Bohemian Foundation, Jaimee Davis and Paul Davis Advised Fund, and all those who have provided such support to our efforts.

Our deepest appreciation to all our donors and partners for helping communities rebuild, recover from and withstand disasters and humanitarian crises.
