Super Typhoon Rai (also known as “Odette”) brought devastating winds, heavy rain and flooding across central Visayas and northern Mindanao in the Philippines Thursday last week.
The Philippine National Police estimates at least 375 dead, many more missing and 500 injured. News and social media photos show extensive damages to homes, businesses and vital infrastructure. The national government declared a state of calamity for affected areas.
“Filipinos are tough, but this super typhoon is a bitter blow for millions of people who are still recovering from devastating storms, floods and COVID-19 in the past year,” said Philippine Red Cross Chairman Richard Gordon in an interview with Al Jazeera.
For survivors in Cagayan de Oro, Super Typhoon Rai hit on the 10th anniversary of Typhoon Washi (locally known as “Sendong”) that left 1,200 dead and caused billions of pesos worth of damage.
