Grant Supports Human Services Council’s Hurricane Sandy Forum
Oct. 21, 2013: (WASHINGTON, DC)—Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) today announced Human Services Council (HSC) as the eighth grantee of the CDP Hurricane Sandy Disaster Recovery Fund. The group has been awarded $15,000 to support its upcoming forum for nonprofit and philanthropic leaders that will explore the role of human services organizations in the Hurricane Sandy recovery.
“The Human Services Council and its members have been active players in Hurricane Sandy response, both early on and as the recovery continues. It’s this type of work—supporting the most vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly and people with disabilities—that are vital to build resilience in communities, said Robert G. Ottenhoff, President and CEO, Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP). “We are proud to support HSC and its commitment to bringing together leaders so that we can all learn together at the forum and find ways to create broader and deeper impact.”
The forum, Sandy One Year Later: Assessing Community Recovery and Anticipating Another Disaster, is set for Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013. HSC will connect leaders of the nonprofit, public, and philanthropic sectors to discuss recent survey findings about the nonprofit human services sector’s response to Superstorm Sandy, continuing recovery efforts, and approaches to preparing for the next disaster.

As a grantee, we are pleased to help fulfill CDP’s role in creating a community of practice whereby organizations come together, explore our past work, and collaborate to create new ideas and approaches that can help people in need in times of disaster,” said HSC Executive Director Michael Stoller.
The Human Services Council (HSC) is an association of nearly 200 New York-based nonprofit social services agencies. Its mission is to strengthen the nonprofit human services sector’s ability to improve the lives of New Yorkers in need. HSC builds the capacity of human services organizations to carry out their missions and gives a voice to people and neighborhoods that need help by highlighting their struggles and the impact that human services organizations have on them.
HSC joins seven other grantees: The Brooklyn Community Foundation, Council of New Jersey Grantmakers, Institute for Public Knowledge at New York University, Make the Road New York, The New Jersey Recovery Fund at the Community Foundation of New Jersey, Puerto Rican Association for Human Development and New Jersey Future. About the CDP Hurricane Sandy Disaster Recovery Fund
While immediate relief dollars went to housing, food and clothing, the CDP Hurricane Sandy Disaster Fund was established to invest in long-term projects that fill gaps where public resources are unavailable or scarce. CDP requested grant applications from NGOs committed to projects that cross broad disciplines; foster collaboration among donors; use existing local philanthropic networks and work to strengthen local philanthropy; promote cross-sector coordination with academics, donors, think tanks, and public and private humanitarian actors; and support innovative research that informs policy and strengthens future disaster preparation and response.
