Center for Disaster Philanthropy Selected as a Featured Nonprofit for ‘CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute’

CNN Heroes invites donations to CDP and seven other organizations responding to COVID-19 and social injustice

Washington (Dec. 1, 2020) — CNN today announced that the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) is among the eight featured nonprofits that viewers can donate to as part of the 14th Annual CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute. Each organization will also receive $10,000.

“This has been an especially challenging year for billions of people worldwide. Disasters upon disasters have tested our strength and determination to secure thriving futures for all communities,” said Lori Bertman, co-founder and board chair of CDP, and chief executive of the Irene W. and C.B. Pennington Foundation. “We are grateful to CNN Heroes for recognizing the critical role CDP has offered for a decade in guiding philanthropy towards providing communities in the U.S. and around the world with resources to recover and rebuild stronger.”

Many communities affected by disasters such as wildfires, hurricanes, COVID-19 and humanitarian emergencies face a long road to recovery. Donations typically decline in the months after a disaster strikes.

Contributions from CNN Heroes and its viewers will provide vital resources to U.S. and international organizations serving people and communities who are disproportionately affected by this year’s and future disasters so they can fully recover and withstand future crises.

“Imagine a world where all communities recover from and flourish in the aftermath of a disaster,” said Patricia McIlreavy, president and CEO of CDP. “At CDP, this is our hope – especially for those that systemically bear the brunt of disasters year after year. We invite people from all over the world to join us in making this world a reality. Together, all of us are called to be heroes in our communities.”

CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute is an annual television special that traditionally honors 10 individuals from around the world for their inspiring charitable efforts, humanitarian work and activism. This year’s show will be a special celebration of the extraordinary acts from the worldwide fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and the pursuit of racial equity and social justice.

It will air on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2020, at 8:00 p.m. ET on CNN and simulcast on CNN International and CNN en Español. Beginning today, viewers can donate to CDP through GoFundMe Charity at CNNHeroes.com or directly at disasterphilanthropy.org.
