In a world overwhelmed by crises, from climate change to social injustices, it is easy to overlook a crisis that might not be in the headlines every day. Yet, I am writing today to draw your attention to a humanitarian crisis that demands our immediate attention and action – the famine in Sudan.

The Center for Disaster Philanthropy is responding to the conditions in Sudan by launching the CDP Sudan Humanitarian Crisis Fund. This fund will provide donors with a vehicle to support those in need with vital resources before the situation deteriorates even further and to support recovery initiatives when possible.

Crisis-level urgency

The situation in Sudan is dire. Prolonged conflict, severe economic decline, climate shocks and political instability have all contributed to one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Millions of people are on the brink of starvation, with the most vulnerable being hit the hardest and more than half of the population have severe food needs.

On Aug. 1, it was reported that famine conditions were present in Sudan’s Darfur region where hundreds of thousands of people have been internally displaced, living in camps, since a civil war began more than a year ago. Official declarations of famine are rare – this is only the third one in the last 20 years globally.

The ripple effects of this crisis are extensive. Families are torn apart, communities are decimated, and the socio-economic fabric of the nation is being eroded. The educational prospects of children are shattered, health systems are overwhelmed and livelihoods are lost.

Worldwide action is needed now

In the face of such a monumental crisis, it is easy to feel helpless. However, collective action can make a significant difference and the international community can mobilize to support Sudan in this time of need. While the world’s attention is often diverted to more high-profile crises, we must not let the plight of the Sudanese people go unnoticed and unsupported.

By donating to the CDP Sudan Humanitarian Crisis Fund, you are directly contributing to saving lives and restoring hope in Sudan. Every donation, no matter how small, can make a difference.

This is a call to action that cannot be ignored. The situation in Sudan is desperate, but with your help, we can make a tangible impact. Let’s stand in solidarity with the people of Sudan and provide them with the support they so urgently need.
