From intern to advocate

In July 2024, I began my journey with the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) as a data entry intern. As someone who has always felt a deep drive to contribute to meaningful causes, I was thrilled to join an organization focused on making a tangible difference in communities impacted by crises. Little did I know how much this role would help me build new skills and give me the experience to see firsthand the hard work that goes into supporting disaster recovery efforts.

Embracing my role in disaster philanthropy

When I first heard about the opportunity to intern for CDP, I was intrigued by the idea of being involved in a space that combines data and compassion. While I initially saw my position as a way to gain experience, I quickly realized that each entry I handled was more than just numbers—it was part of a larger mission.

The data I worked on included application materials, grant allocations and coding statistics to show how CDP has assisted the various communities we serve. While my job involved organizing this information, I understood that these data points reflected CDP’s efforts to support those in need. Over time, I felt that my role became much more than simply filling out spreadsheets. It became about learning what it takes to help communities recover from disasters.

A unique perspective on teamwork and purpose

One thing I appreciated most about my time at CDP was the chance to work with a team passionate about disaster relief and recovery. I was warmly welcomed into a collaborative and purpose-driven environment where everyone—from communications to operations—was dedicated to making a difference.

My supervisor, Audrey, encouraged me to ask questions, share insights and understand the “why” behind every task. By involving me in weekly check-ins and team meetings, the team helped me connect my daily work to the bigger picture of our mission. Through these discussions, I learned about the complexities and challenges of disaster response, the importance of efficient data management, and the impact of well-targeted funding. Every task, no matter how small, felt like a contribution to a collective effort that would ultimately help rebuild lives and communities.

Developing skills and gaining confidence

The technical aspects of my internship allowed me to dive deep into data entry, analysis and database management. I learned how to use software I’d never encountered before and developed a strong attention to detail—skills I know will serve me well in future roles.

At first, the volume of data entries seemed daunting, and I worried about making errors. However, as the weeks passed, I grew more confident in my work and understood how my contributions fit into the organization’s broader goals. This experience refined my technical abilities and gave me a newfound confidence in tackling challenges and taking ownership of my responsibilities.

Reflections and moving forward

As my internship with the CDP comes to an end, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be part of an organization that works tirelessly to support disaster-affected communities. I leave with a deep respect for the behind-the-scenes work that fuels disaster relief efforts and a better understanding of how data-driven strategies can maximize positive impact.
