In June, at the height of the Black Lives Matter protests across America, the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) released a statement recognizing the systemic social, health and political disparities and the harrowing injustices and racism prevalent in all aspects of life for Black Americans.

The attacks in Washington, D.C., and across our nation on January 6, 2021, were further demonstrations of the inequities that define our country. It was a stark example of the depth of privilege extended to some within a system built on white supremacy. And yet another example of its power and pervasiveness to those Black, Indigenous and People of Color who suffer under that system.

CDP believes we must fight for a democracy that protects and values our differences and allows all communities to thrive. We must hold to account those who seek to tear down our democracy. We must dismantle racism. And most importantly, we must own that the structural inequities on display exist by design and need to be torn out by their very roots.
