CDP 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season Recovery Fund

The 2019 Atlantic hurricane season was marked by two major storms.

First, the fury of Hurricane Dorian and its devastating impacts on islands in The Bahamas, the Outer Banks of North Carolina and Canada’s Maritime provinces. Then there was the major flooding in parts of southwestern Louisiana and eastern Texas, including Houston, caused by Tropical Storm Imelda — proof that storms do not need to reach hurricane strength to cause extensive damage.

Why we launched this Fund

The CDP 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season Recovery Fund was launched to address medium- and long-term recovery needs from these storms, including rebuilding homes and livelihoods; meeting the needs of vulnerable populations; supporting mental health services; and addressing pressing needs that arise as recovery efforts progress.

Specific communities and funding gaps to address unmet recovery needs were determined by our expert CDP staff in consultation with local stakeholders and recovery experts. The Fund explored investing in all geographic areas affected by this season’s Atlantic hurricanes.

Funding focus

Through CDP’s unparalleled expertise in disaster management and grantmaking, the Fund invested in projects and initiatives that:

  • Support vulnerable populations whose lives and livelihoods have been devastated.
  • Emphasize funding that is medium- and long-term in nature, based upon prevailing needs that have emerged post-disaster.
  • Fill in gaps where public resources are unavailable or scarce.
  • Foster collaborative relationships among grantees and other organizations.

The programmatic expertise of CDP’s board, staff and advisory council – paired with an extensive network of disaster management experts – guided our grantmaking strategy. Emphasis was placed on targeted, holistic grants in order to address the greatest needs and gaps in funding of recovery efforts. CDP provides due diligence in its evaluation of grantees as part of our close attention to stewardship of donor dollars.
